Argentina vs. Mexico - Betting tips, predictions, and odds
Round 2 in Group C of the FIFA World Cup will close with a clash between Argentina and Mexico at Lusail Iconic Stadium. Feel free to check out the best Argentina vs. Mexico betting tips and predictions.
H2H, form, and stats
Argentina and Mexico have met on 17 occasions so far. The current record is W12-D4-L2 in Argentina’s favor. La Albiceleste won each of the previous three H2H duels and didn't concede a single goal, while they scored at least two in each game. The most recent H2H was a friendly in 2019 when Lautaro Martinez scored a hat-trick in a 4-0 victory.
Argentina suffered a massive shock in their opening game of this World Cup as they lost 2-1 to Saudi Arabia. It all started well for Lionel Scaloni’s men, who got to a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute through Lionel Messi’s penalty.
Argentina was dominant in the first half and had a couple of goals ruled out for offside, but things changed early in the second half as Saudi Arabia scored a pair of quick goals to make it 2-1. Although Argentina tried to equalize and had several solid opportunities, they failed to do so as the Green Falcons got away with a historic victory. It was Argentina’s first defeat in 37 matches; they fall one short of Italy’s record of 37 unbeaten games.
Mexico had a bit of luck in their first game in Qatar. Namely, they drew 0-0 with Poland after Robert Lewandowski missed a penalty, or should we say, after Guillermo Ochoa saved his poor attempt. The Mexicans were perhaps a better side as they had more possession and shots (13-8, 4-1 on target), but they are surely not unhappy as Poland had the biggest opportunity in the match. Still, failing to win is a problem for El Tri as they recorded just three wins in the last ten games (D3, L4).
Injuries and squad news
Argentina’s head coach Lionel Scaloni will have to change a lot from the loss to Saudi Arabia. They must change their predictable strategy which was to give the ball to Messi and pray for the best. The Arabians saw that through and caught the Argentines in an offside trap on ten different occasions! Scaloni won the Copa America with this team and he surely knows what to do, and if he decides to drop the likes of Papu Gomez, Cristian Romero, and/or Leandro Paredes - nobody would blame him.
When it comes to Mexico, there shouldn't be many changes. Maybe the only one could be in the attack. Raul Jimenez is back from an injury, and even though he is not in form, he is the top scorer of this generation. Jimenez came on as a sub for Henry Martin with 20 minutes to go against Poland, so head coach Gerardo Martino has the option to start Jimenez against Argentina.
Argentina vs. Mexico Betting predictions and odds
Argentina is a firm favorite in this game, but the bettors should be worried after that Round 1 performance by La Albiceleste. Still, the odds on the favorites are 1.58; a draw is at 4.04, while if you believe the Mexicans can get three points, you can back them at 5.75. If you prefer betting on goals, you can choose from Over 2.5 goals at 2.10 and Under 2.5 goals at 1.73.
Our best tip for Argentina vs. Mexico game
Interestingly, none of the 17 H2H encounters ended without goals, and after Mexico’s scoreless draw with Poland, we don't expect to see another 0-0 stalemate. We know that the Mexicans wouldn't mind such an outcome against Argentina, but Argentina must be attacking-minded in this duel as they know that they must score to keep Round of 16 hopes alive. Mexico will have numerous opportunities on the counter-attack, and that’s why we’re going with both teams scoring. Each of the three H2Hs at World Cups produced goals on both ends.
