Bayern Munich vs Paris Saint-Germain Preview
Bayern Munich will welcome Paris Saint-Germain to Germany this Wednesday evening with the Bundesliga champions 1-0 up in the two-legged tie thanks to another goal from Kinglsey Coman against his boyhood club.
Coman spent 10 years with PSG, but since joining Bayern, he has helped guide his side to a victory over his former teammates with a winner in the 2020 Champions League final and another finish a few weeks back.
Bayern’s win in the French capital has now extended their record-breaking run in the Champions League to seven victories in a row and a stunning record of just one two goals conceded and 19 goals scored - it’s the best run to this stage in the competition’s history.
Back in the league, however, the German champions are being chased down by Borussia Dortmund as they sit ahead of their rivals on only goals difference. Since the win over PSG in Paris, however, Julian Nagelsmann's men have gone on to put fellow title contenders, Union Berlin, to the sword in a 3-0 win. Former PSG man, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, scored that day and he also got the winner away to Stuttgart last weekend.
As for PSG, they've won their three games since the first leg loss by defeating Lille, Marseille and Nantes where they have netted 11 goals but let in five. In all these fixtures, the irreplaceable duo of Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe have both scored a goal each, as the Frenchman moves onto 30 goals in 30 games, just as the World Cup-winning Argentine moved to 16 assists and 18 goals for the season.
Quite incredibly, both these sides have netted 66 goals in their league campaign so far, although Bayern have played three games fewer. An early goal in this one for PSG would spring an almighty second leg after very few chances in the first from the Ligue 1 champions.
Bayern Munich team news
Benjamin Pavard was sent off in the first leg and will now be suspended for this match. Joao Cancelo is reportedly unhappy with his playing time in Germany so far, but he likely starts now with Pavard out. Serge Gnabry, Alphonso Davies and Thomas Muller all started on the bench in the game in Paris but could now start.
Yann Sommer will stay in goal as Manuel Neuer continues his return to fitness, while Noussair Mazraoui and Lucas Hernandez remain sidelined.
PSG team news
The major news coming out of the French capital this week has been the season-ending injury to Neymar, as the Brazilian requires surgery on his ankle.
Presnel Kimpembe is also ruled out alongside former Bayern man, Renato Sanches. Mbappe started on the bench in the loss to Bayern, but he no doubt returns to the starting XI in this one after becoming PSG’s all-time leading goalscorer with 201 goals in 247 games.
16-year-old Warren Zaire-Emery performed well in the first leg and continues to stun Europe with his performances at such a young age. He does, however, likely drop out for the returning Marco Verratti.
