H2H, form, and stats
Brazil and South Korea have faced five times so far, and the all-time record is W4, D0, L1 on Brazil’s favor. South Korea did win the first-ever H2H back in 1999, but A Seleção win the next four meetings. Most recently, they played this June when Brazil secured a massive 5-1 victory. Neymar scored two, while Richarlison, Coutinho, and Gabriel Jesus also found the back of the net. Ui-Jo Hwang scored the only goal for South Korea.
Brazil opted to change its usual starting eleven in Round 3 of the group stage against Cameroon, which resulted in a 1-0 defeat. Still, the Brazilians won 1st place in that group, thanks to a better goal difference than Switzerland. Cameroon ended Brazil’s excellent unbeaten run that lasted 17 matches (since July 2021). Brazil was on a nine-game winning streak and scored in ten consecutive games before that defeat to the Indomitable Lions. Here in Qatar, Brazil scored only three goals in three matches. Richarlison scored two of them, while Casemiro bagged a game-winning goal against Switzerland.
South Korea made a big upset by beating Portugal in Round 3 to progress to the Round of 16. The Taegeuk Warriors collected only a point from the opening two games against Uruguay and Ghana, but then came from behind to beat Portugal 2-1. In a dramatic finish, Hee-Chan Hwang scored in injury time to give the South Koreans their third knockout phase at the World Cup and first since South Africa in 2010. Their best player, Son Heung-min, didn't score in this tournament, but he did register that crucial assist for Hwang. Gue-Sung Cho is the team’s top scorer in Qatar with two goals, both scored in a 3-2 loss to Ghana. South Korea has seven wins in 12 matches (D3, L2).
Injuries and squad news
Brazil’s head coach Tite has a lot of injury-related concerns for this game against South Korea. Gabriel Jesus suffered a knee injury against Cameroon and will miss the rest of the World Cup, while left-backs Alex Sandro (muscle) and Alex Telles (knee) are also out. Neymar, who missed the last two matches, is questionable with an ankle injury but will likely play. The right-back Danilo is also questionable with an ankle issue. It’s unknown who will start as a left-back, while Eder Militao is going to start as a right-back in case Danilo misses Monday’s game.
South Korea’s head coach Paulo Bento is without any problems for the clash with Brazil. Center-back Min-Jae Kim didn't play against Portugal to recover from a minor injury and he should start on Monday. After scoring a winner against Portugal, Hee-Chan Hwang could get a starting nod even though he didn't feature in the first two games in the tournament.
Betting predictions and odds
Brazil is an absolute favorite at 1.30 odds, but these fresh injuries can be a bit concerning for the bettors. Those who believe South Korea can make another shock, back the Taegeuk Warriors at 10.50, while a draw is 5.30. When it comes to goals, Over 2.5 goals is 1.84 and Under 2.5 goals at 1.96.
Our best tip for Brazil vs. South Korea game
Although those injuries can be concerning in the latter stages, Brazil shouldn't have problems with South Korea, especially with scoring. South Korea conceded three goals to Ghana here in Qatar and five to Brazil in a friendly this year, and even though A Seleção scored just three goals so far, it seems that they played at 50% in the group.
We expect them to start crushing their opponents now in the knockout phase, and South Korea will be the first team to suffer a big defeat against Brazil. We’re aware of Korea’s discipline and hard work, but they can’t compare to one of the strongest teams in the tournament. Brazil saved all the key players in the latest game against Cameroon, and they will be fresh and ready to dismantle South Korea.
