Club Nacional de Football win or draw
Copa Libertadores de America is the most prestigious club competition in South American football. It is organized by CONMEBOL since 1960. The competition has had several different formats over its lifetime, and now it is played in a format similar to the UEFA Champions League. The winner of the Copa Libertadores becomes eligible to play in the FIFA Club World Cup. Independiente of Argentina is the most successful club in the cup’s history, having won the tournament seven times. Teams from Argentina have been the most successful so far as they accumulated the most victories (25), and current champions are River Plate from Buenos Aires.
In total 47 teams from the 10 CONMEBOL member associations qualified for the tournament, and 32 of them qualified for the group stage. The qualifying stage did not offer some major upsets although some well known names like Atletico Nacional or Universidad de Chile were eliminated in the process.
32 teams are divided in eight groups. Each group is played on a home-and-away round-robin basis. The winners and runners-up of each group advance to the round of 16 of the knockout stages. The third-placed teams of each group enter the Copa Sudamericana second stage.
So far each team have played three group stage matches, and we can start making some conclusions. In Group A Internacional sit on the top with seven points, followed by Palestino with four. Current champions River Plate are still winless, having drawn all three matches.
Group B has been dominated by Cruzeiro. The Brazilian side tops the group with nine points, while Lara, Emelec and Huracan still have chances to qualify for the next stage.
In Group C everything is still open as Olimpia and Universidad de Concepcion share first position with five points, followed by Godoy Cruz with 3 and Sporting Cristal with 1 point.
Penarol and Flamengo each collected six points in group D, and they’re followed by LDU de Quito, while San Jose of Bolivia have minimal chances to advance.
Cerro Porteno of Paraguay pleasantly surprised as they won all three matches in difficult group E where they’re placed alongside Nacional of Uruguay and Atletico Mineiro of Brazil.
San Lorenzo had terrible domestic season, but after three matches they lead in group F in front of Palmeiras and Melgar. All three sides have chances to advance, while Junior of Colombia still await their first point.
Group G has been most complicated so far. Athletico Paranaense are in lead with six points, followed by Boca Juniors and Tolima with four, while Jorge Wilstermann have 2 points.
Group H was supposed to be very interesting, but so far has been dominated by Libertad (9 points) and Universidad Catolica (6 points). Gremio of Brazil and Rosario Central of Argentina collected just one point in first three matches.
Cruzeiro – The Brazilian side have nine points from three matches and they are yet to concede first goal. They have terrific squad and could go all the way to the end. Bookies see them as one of the favorites of this competition and offer 8,00 for them to win the Copa Libertadores. River Plate – River are still winless, but they’re also still unbeaten. They were not convincing in their first three matches of the group stage, but Marcelo Gallardo has very strong team, and they know how to play the Copa. River won the title in 2015 and 2018, so we expect them once again to be the title contenders. Because of the slow start to the competition bookies offer 13,00 for them to lift the trophy. Palmeiras – Palmeiras are current Brazilian champions and this fact puts them as one of the favorites of the competition. They haven’t been convincing so far, but they won’t have problem to qualify for the knockout stage as they’re much stronger than San Lorenzo, Melgar and Junior. Boca Juniors – Boca are always among the favorites of this competition. They have won the Copa Libertadores six times, last season they played in the final and they have been very good in the national championship.
Universidad Catolica – Current Chilean champions are extremely good at their stadium where they beat Gremio of Brazil and Rosario Central of Argentina. They are not among the favorites to win the trophy, but if they will continue to play so good at their stadium they could go really far. At the moment we can get odds around 26,00 for their victory. Cerro Porteno – Cerro are one of the two top teams in Paraguay, but often they have been overshadowed by their rivals Olimpia who were very successful in the Copa Libertadores. But this season Cerro are excellent. At home they beat Nacional of Uruguay and Zamora of Venezuela, while they made huge surprise when they beat Atletico Mineiro away in Belo Horizonte. Bookies have adjusted odds and offer 15,00 against their triumph, but still we can get some value from this. Penarol – Penarol are not classic underdogs as we talk about the Uruguayan giants who won 5 Copas and have been Uruguayan champions 50 times. Still, their last win in the Libertadores came more than 30 years ago, and they are not considered as top favorites to lift the trophy. So far they have been excellent in the Copa Libertadores and national championship, so 17,00 are more than good odds for their triumph.
