H2H, form, and stats
Costa Rica and Germany have met once before, and it was at the World Cup 2006 in Germany when Die Mannschaft secured a 4-2 win in the group stage.
Costa Rica matched its biggest defeat in history in a 7-0 loss to Spain in Round 1 of this World Cup in Qatar. However, Los Ticos bounced back and surprised Japan with a 1-0 victory in the following game, although the Samurai Blue were better opponents.
Still, Luis Fernando Suárez’s men scored from their only shot on target through Keysher Fuller, whose shot wasn't great, but the Japanese goalkeeper Shuichi Gonda couldn't parry it, which in the end resulted in three points for Costa Rica. The loss to Spain was devastating, but Costa Rica suffered just two defeats in the last 15 matches (W11, D3).
Germany managed to recover from a Round 1 shock and a 2-1 loss to Japan. They responded with a solid performance against Spain and got a 1-1 draw, although they were a better rival in the second half. Antonio Rudiger had his goal disallowed in the 40th minute and then Spain took a 1-0 lead through Alvaro Morata, but the substitute Niclas Fullkrug tied the game in the 83rd minute, his second goal in three matches for Die Mannschaft. Still, a point from two games is not what they planned when they arrived in Qatar, so Hansi Flick’s men must prove their worth against Costa Rica on Thursday and get three points.
Injuries and squad news
Defender Francisco Calvo is suspended for the game against Germany after collecting two yellow cards in the opening two rounds. Juan Pablo Vargas or Carlos Martínez will start in Calvo’s place on Thursday as Luis Fernando Suárez is likely going to stick to his 5-4-1 formation with Anthony Contreras or Johan Venegas. It wouldn't be surprising to see Joel Campbell leading the line as he is capable of shifting from his usual winger role to a striker.
Germany’s head coach Hansi Flick si without any selection dilemmas when it comes to injuries and suspensions. He may opt to go with Fullkrug from the start after that goal against Spain because the Germans do need a classic striker up front, and Werder Bremen’s man is the only of that kind in the squad.
Betting predictions and odds
The odds on Germany’s win have drastically dropped to 1.08, and under no circumstances we would suggest you back the favorites at these miserable odds. Costa Rica is currently at 24.00, which are the highest odds since the start of this World Cup, while a draw is 11.00. Over 2.5 goals can be found at low 1.28 odds, while Under 2.5 goals is 3.36.
Our best tip for Costa Rica vs. Germany game
Germany is an absolute favorite, but we witnessed some major surprises in this tournament, and you should have this in mind before placing a bet on this particular match. The Germans scored just two goals so far in Qatar, one of which came from the penalty spot, and although the bookies think they will dismantle Los Ticos here, we are not that convinced.
In case Japan losses to Spain, which is realistic to expect, Costa Rica will need a point to advance to the knockout phase. However, it’s going to be extremely hard to get that draw against Germany, but hey, bigger upsets happened at this World Cup. While we do think Germany will win, we’re backing Costa Rica to put up a fight and not lose by more than two goals.
