H2H, form, and stats
It’s going to be the first-ever H2H duel between these two nations.
Croatia extended its unbeaten run to seven matches (W5, D2) with a bore 0-0 draw against Morocco in their opening game at the World Cup in Qatar. Vatreni were the favorites to get three points but weren't better than the Atlas Lions and didn't deserve more than a point to start the tournament. It wasn’t a good display from the world’s vice-champions, and they must improve in this game if they want to play beyond the group stage. Nikola Vlašić had the best opportunity for the Croatians late in the first half, but overall, it was a pale performance.
Canada played its first game at the World Cup since 1986 and entered the match against favored Belgium on a high note. The Red Devils were confused by Canada’s flying start and couldn't get a grip on defense, which resulted in a penalty for the Maple Leafs in the 11th minute. Unfortunately, Alphonso Davies failed to convert it and score the first-ever goal for his nation at World Cups as Thibaut Courtois anticipated his shot well and made the save.
To be fair, it was a poor penalty from Bayern Munich’s left-back. Even after that moment, Canada was a better side and deserved to score, but they missed their chances, while on the other end, the experienced Belgians took their lone and scored through Michy Batshuayi before the interval. Canada tried to equalize in the second 45 minutes but lacked quality finishing, so they left the stadium empty-handed and with a 1-0 defeat despite having even 21 shots (four on target).
Injuries and squad news
Croatia’s head coach Zlatko Dalić doesn't have any injury-related concerns, but he could decide to change something in his starting eleven. Vatreni weren't bad against Morocco, but we expect a lot more from the vice-champions and we’ll surely see something else against Canada. Luka Modrić, although being awarded a Player of the Match award (undeservedly, in our opinion), evidently didn't play at the highest level we got used to seeing from him.
He even deserved a yellow card on a couple of occasions, but the Argentine referee Rapallini showed respect and didn't show it to Modrić, which was just one of many mistakes from referees at this World Cup. The point is, Modrić hasn't run the midfield as we anticipated and is going to be interesting to see how he’ll hope with energetic Canada’s midfield.
Canada’s head coach John Herdman has to be happy with how his players performed against the third-placed team from the previous World Cup, but he must be disappointed after that missed penalty and numerous chances that went to waste. Still, there is room for improvement, and the Maple Leafs can be encouraged as that first-ever World Cup goal is just around the corner. Herdman has the option to start both Jonathan David and Cyle Larin in the attack and leave Tajon Buchanan or Junior Hoilett on the bench. Larin played well in his 33-minute cameo against Belgium as he served as a classic target man. Of course, all eyes will be on Alphonso Davies, who will be highly motivated to make amends for the missed penalty.
Croatia vs. Canada Betting predictions and odds
Obviously, the bookmakers were impressed with Canada’s display against Belgium, so they are giving higher odds on Croatia’s win compared to the start of the World Cup. The odds jumped from 1.76 to 2.09, so if you think the experience Croatia will get an edge over the Canadians here, you can take this opportunity to more than double your stake. A draw is at 3.46, while Canada can be backed at 3.48, as the odds dropped from 4.72. For the goals, Over 2.5 goals is at 2.11, while Under 2.5 goals can be found at 1.72.
Our best tip for Croatia vs. Canada game
Croatia did keep its net intact in four of the last six games, but Canada’s fast transition and speedy forwards can worry Vatreni in this one. Their defense is fairly slow, and the Maple Leafs must take advantage of it to score at least a goal. We believe luck will be on their side following those unlucky moments against Belgium. The quality and experience are on Croatia’s side, but that was also the case against Morocco and they still failed to win. This time around, we expect to see goals from both Croatia and Canada after they couldn't find the back of the net on their respective openers.
