England vs Germany
England vs Germany takes place on June 29 at Wembley Stadium in what is probably the pick of the round of 16 ties at Euro 2021. England qualified for the knockout stages as group winners despite a fairly dour set of results, while Germany finished second in the “Group of Death” Group F after twice coming from behind against Hungary to draw 2-2 in their final group game. Read on for more analysis, match predictions and betting tips.
Form
If you were to believe the English press, then the England team have played a shocking tournament and are lucky to even be in the knockout stages. While it’s true the games have been drab and dull affairs, England are yet to concede a goal and have effectively closed out two opponents in what could have been high pressure situations. However, the lack of service to front man Harry Kane has starved him of chances, let alone goals and there is a real fear that if that isn’t rectified this could be the end of the road for England. England fell at the round of 16 in Euro 2016 to the very unfancied Iceland; Germany are a much stronger proposition.
For all of the wailing and gnashing of teeth in England, Germany coach Joachim Low must have had his heart in his mouth a few times during the draw with Hungary on Wednesday. Expected to put away their much weaker opponents, Germany couldn’t make possession count and were stunned twice as Hungary took the lead. There must have been the feeling that when Kai Havertz scored that normal service would resume but Hungary went up the other end from kick off and Dunajska Streda left midfielder Andras Schafer beat Manuel Neuer to the ball, nodding home. Low’s team have had some iffy moments this year including losing at home to North Macedonia and they will need to be much more on it to win this one.

Injuries
While Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson both returned to the team in the 1-0 win over Czech Republic, Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell both missed out having been in close contact with Scotland’s Billy Gilmour who has been diagnosed as Covid positive. As it stands neither Mount nor Chilwell can play in this fixture which means a question for Southgate over who to pick in the 10 slot. Jack Grealish did well against the Czechs but Man City’s Phil Foden could return now that a booking is not an issue. One player who might have forced his way into the team is Bukayo Saka, who impressed hugely for England with his pace and direct dribbling.
Bayern Munich forward Thomas Mueller has confirmed he is fit for the game with England having come on as a sub in the game against Hungary, and he could potentially take the place of teammate Leroy Sane in the Germany attack. Chelsea forward Timo Werner will be pushing for a place in the first eleven having come off the bench twice so far in the group stages, with Serge Gnabry the likely fall guy if Werner is preferred.
Match Predictions
England are only marginal favourites to win this game with the bookies offering 2.50 against Gareth Southgate’s men winning it in 90 minutes; Germany on the other hand are 3.00 to win without need for extra time or penalties. It’s been almost exactly 25 years since Southgate missed a penalty in a European Championship semi-final defeat to Germany at Wembley, and the former Middlesbrough coach will no doubt want to erase that memory with a win here. England’s record against Germany is poor with one win in the last five against one of their biggest rivals; the smarter betting tips might be the ones that say that poor record will continue in this game.
