England vs. Iran - Betting tips, predictions, and odds
The second day of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar starts with the Group B tilt between England and Iran at Khalifa International Stadium. Here you can read the best England vs. Iran betting tips and predictions.
H2H, form, and stats
England and Iran never met before. Following a dominant campaign in the World Cup qualifiers and a top spot in the group ahead of Poland, Albania, and Hungary, the Three Lions were disappointed in the UEFA Nations League. Gareth Southgate’s guys conceded just three goals in ten matches in the WC qualifiers and scored 39 in return, but they looked completely different in the UNL. With only three points out of six matches and no wins, England will go down to the Group 2 of the National League.
Iran also topped their WC qualification group, finishing above South Korea and UAE. The Persian Stars then played four friendly games, winning two and losing one in the process. Iran did fail to score more than a goal in each of those four matches but that was enough to beat Uruguay and Nicaragua.
Injuries and squad news
Gareth Southgate made some unpopular moves among England fans when it comes to player call-ups for this World Cup. He called Manchester City’s midfielder Kalvin Phillips, who barely saw the pitch this season, and also brought Harry Maguire and Jack Grealish. In a corresponding move, Southgate left out some quality players such as Ben Chilwell, Fikayo Tomori, James Ward-Prowse, Tammy Abraham, Jarrod Bowen, and Ivan Toney.
Reece James couldn’t travel to Qatar due to an injury. Captain Harry Kane, who is the biggest favorite for the Golden Boot at the World Cup, is going to be a player to watch for the Englishmen in the opening game against Iran.
Iran’s head coach Carlos Queiroz didn't have selection problems like Southgate and will rely on his most experienced players to try to make a surprise and advance to the knockout stage. It wouldn't be a shock if they finish 2nd behind England and ahead of the USA and Wales.
Mehdi Taremi, Karim Ansarifard, and Sardar Azmoun will lead the line for the Iranians. Alireza Jahanbakhsh and Saman Ghoddos are the most influential in the middle of the park, while captain Ehsan Hajsafi, who has 121 caps, is the spine of this team.
England - Iran: Betting predictions and odds
England is a massive favorite at -1.35, and everything but a comfortable win for the Three Lions would be surprising. Those who believe in upsets and think that England’s poor Nations League form will translate into the World Cup can back Iran at 9.59, while the odds for a draw are 4.45. When it comes to goals, Over 2.5 goals can be backed at 2.2, while Under 2.5 goals is at 1.65.
Our best tip for England vs. Iran game
Betting on England to win at low odds is out of the question, so we will have to spice it up a bit. Many will assume that the Three Lions are going to struggle at the World Cup, but let’s face it, they have the weakest group in the tournament.
If they don't progress to the knockout phase as the top team out of this group, the world would be stunned. They have the quality, youth mixed with experience, and everything they need to start this competition with an easy victory. That’s why we’re backing them to beat Iran by two goals or more.
