France vs. Australia - Betting tips, predictions, and odds
France and Australia will close the opening round of Group D at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar with a clash at Al Janoub Stadium. Here you can read the best France vs. Australia betting tips and predictions.
H2H, form, and stats
France and Australia have faced four times so far. The Frenchmen have two victories, while the Socceroos won the first-ever meeting at the Confederations Cup back in 2001. The most recent H2H duel came four years ago at the World Cup in Russia when France won 2-1 in the group stage. Antoine Griezmann scored for Les Bleus, Mile Jedinak equalized, while Aziz Behich’s own goal late in the game gave three points to France.
France didn't have problems qualifying for Qatar. They topped their group ahead of Ukraine and Finland without losing a single match, allowing just three and scoring 18 goals in the process. However, France has only one victory in the last six games. They have disappointed in the UEFA Nations League, where they ended the group in 3rd place behind Croatia and Denmark and with miserable five points out of six matches.
Australia failed to win the last three games of their qualifying campaign, so they were forced to play two additional playoff matches. After defeating UAE 2-1, the Aussies beat Peru on penalties to book their ticket for Qatar. Since that win over Peru, Australia faced New Zealand in a pair of friendlies and won both games without allowing a goal along the way.
Injuries and squad news
France's head coach Didier Deschamps had several problems in assembling his squad for the World Cup. The biggest issues were in the midfield as Deschamps couldn't call injured N’Golo Kante and Paul Pogba, who bossed the middle of the park four years ago in Russia when Les Bleus lift their second WC trophy.
Defender Presnel Kimpembe was also left home due to an injury, while forward Christopher Nkunku suffered an injury in training and was removed from the team. In his place, Deschamps called Randal Kolo Muani. Left-backs Ferland Mendy and Lucas Digne didn't get the call.
Australia will miss Tom Rogic as the midfielder and the second-best scorer of this generation withdrew for personal reasons. Head coach Graham Arnold decided not to call defender Trent Sainsbury, who has 61 caps to his name. Striker Mathew Leckie, who is the team’s top scorer with 13 goals, and midfielder Aaron Mooy, who has over 50 caps, will be key players for Australia in Qatar.
France vs Australia Betting predictions and odds
France is an absolute favorite in this game, but the low odds of 1.23 on Deschamps’ team win are not going to attract many bettors. Backing Australia at 12.50 odds could make you a little fortune, but this is unlikely to happen, while a draw is at 6.10. The bookies expect France to be efficient in this encounter and score multiple goals, and therefore the odds of 1.67 on Over 2.5 goals. On the other hand, Under 2.5 goals can be backed at 2.20.
Our best tip for France vs. Australia game
Australia is a tough team to beat, and France witnessed that in the previous World Cup when they barely managed to get a 2-1 victory. We expect to see another hard-fought tilt here and France is not going to have an easy job.
Without Kante and Pogba in the midfield, that’s not the same team, and we believe that midfield is going to be exposed on several occasions. Of course, France has one of the deadliest attacks in the world, led by Kylian Mbappé, so they should score at least one or two goals. Still, we think the Socceroos are going to be a tough nut to crack.
