Ghana vs. Uruguay - Betting tips, predictions, and odds
Uruguay is facing elimination from the FIFA World Cup when they face Ghana in Round 3 of Group H at Al Janoub Stadium. Check out the best Ghana vs. Uruguay betting tips and predictions.
H2H, form, and stats
Ghana and Uruguay have played just once before, but that was a fantastic game and real football fans will never forget it. It was a quarter-finals tilt at the World Cup 2010 in South Africa when we witnessed some memorable moments. It was a 1-1 tie in regular time and as we approached the final minute of extra time, Ghana had a golden opportunity to score, but Luis Suarez deliberately handed the ball to save his net and concede a penalty. His sacrifice paid off as Gyan Asamoah missed from the spot and Uruguay went through after a penalty shootout. Nobody can forget that game!
Ghana played well in the opener against Portugal but lost 3-2. However, the Black Stars bounced back with a 3-2 victory over South Korea and now a point will likely be enough for them to advance to the Round of 16.
Mohammed Salisu and Mohammed Kudus scored first-half goals for Ghana to make it 2-0, but South Korea responded with a pair of goals in the space of just three minutes in the second half. South Korea dominated the game and when everybody thought they are going to take a lead, Ghana struck through Kudus who scored the final goal of the match and made it 3-2 for the Black Stars. Interestingly, each of Ghana’s shots on target ended behind Seung-Gyu Kim’s back.
Uruguay has been one of the biggest disappointments of this tournament so far, and only a victory here is working for them. La Celeste is the only team at this World Cup that failed to score a single goal, and now they must score at least one (although we don't think it would be enough) to progress to the knockout stage.
Following an unlucky 0-0 draw with South Korea, Uruguay lost 2-0 to Portugal, in a game they also deserved to score, but once again, they didn't have luck. Rodrigo Bentancur, Luis Suarez, and Giorgian de Arrascaeta all have great chances for the Uruguayans, while Maximiliano Gomez hit the post, which is the third time Uruguay hit the frame of the goal in this tournament.
Injuries and squad news
Ghana’s head coach Otto Addo is happy to have all the players healthy and at his disposal. He will not back down from his 4-2-3-1 formation with Inaki Williams up front and brothers Ayew with Kudus playing behind him. These four players already have three goals and two assists among them so far at this World Cup, so it’s evident who will cause the most problems for Uruguay.
Uruguay’s head coach Diego Alonso cannot count on defender Ronald Araujo, who is out with a muscle injury. After going with a 5-3-2 formation against Portugal and with a clear intention of getting a point, unsuccessfully as it turned out, Alonso will likely return to a 4-3-3 formation he used against South Korea in Round 1. This makes sense because Uruguay must attack and score, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see Suarez, Cavani, and Nunez leading the line from the start.
Betting predictions and odds
The bookies still believe Uruguay is good enough to make it to the Round of 16, so they offer 1.70 odds on Alonso’s team to get a win. Ghana is at 4.96, while a draw is at 3.76. For those who like to bet on goals, Over 2.5 goals is 2.02 and Under 2.5 goals is 1.79.
Our best tip for Ghana vs. Uruguay game
It’s hard to imagine that a team made of such attacking stars as Suarez, Cavani, and Nunez is the only one in the tournament without a goal scored. That must change on Friday if Uruguay wants to make it through, but we are not convinced that one goal will help them a lot.
Ghana showed that they are very good offensively with five goals in two games, and with such a prolific attack, the Black Stars have the ability to unlock Uruguay’s sturdy defense. Ghana is looking for revenge for the game from the WC 2010 we mentioned earlier in this preview, and all they need to do is to grab a point. We’re backing them to do it because momentum is on their side, while Uruguay will burn under pressure.
