Morocco vs. Spain - Betting tips, predictions, and odds
Morroco and Spain will play the penultimate Round of 16 match of the FIFA World Cup when they meet at Education City Stadium. Here you can check out the best Morocco vs. Spain betting tips and predictions.
H2H, form, and stats
Morroco and Spain have met on three occasions before. The first two H2Hs were played more than 50 years ago in the qualifications for the World Cup in 1962 when Spain won both duels. The most recent was four years ago at the World Cup in Russia. That match ended 2-2, which was Morocco’s only point in Russia.
Morocco topped the F with seven points and surprised many by finishing above Croatia and Belgium. After a scoreless draw with Croatia, the Atlas Lions defeated Belgium 2-0 and then Canada 2-1. Walid Regragui’s side ended the group stage as one of six teams that conceded just a goal. Hakim Ziyech, Zakaria Aboukhlal, Youssef En Nesyri, and Romain Saiss scored for the Moroccans so far at this World Cup. Morocco is unbeaten in the last ten matches (W7, D3) and allowed only four goals in that span.
Spain lost the final match of the group phase to Japan and dropped to 2nd place with four points but a better goal difference than third-placed Germany. Luis Enrique’s men impressed in the opener with a 7-0 victory over Costa Rica, their biggest win at World Cups. However, they got just a point from the next two games, which gives hope to Morocco in this Round of 16 tilt. Alvaro Morata is Spain’s top scorer here in Qatar with three goals; Ferran Torres has two, while Jordi Alba registered a pair of assists. La Furia Roja lost just two of the previous 14 matches (W9, D3).
Injuries and squad news
Walid Regragui doesn’t have any new problems related to injuries. Achraf Hakimi and Hakim Ziyech have minor setbacks but they will be ready to take on Spain on Tuesday, so we expect them to start. The 4-2-3-1 formation will remain intact with Youssef En Nesyri up front. Hakimi and Noussair Mazraoui will join the attack often and will play a vital role in the counter-attacks.
Luis Enrique is delighted to have all of his players ready and healthy for this encounter. After opting to go without a classic No. 9 in the opening two games, Enrique started Alvaro Morata against Japan and Atletico Madrid’s striker answered with a goal, his third in the tournament. Morata is likely going to start against Morocco as well, while Dani Carvajal and Jordi Alba will return to the full-back positions.
Betting predictions and odds
Spain is a strong favorite in this game and the bookies give 1.57 odds on La Furia Roja. Morocco showed quality in the group stage, so if you believe the Atlas Lions can make an upset here, back them at 6.30, while a draw is 3.86. The bookmakers don’t expect a lot of goals here; Over 2.5 goals is 2.23 and Under 2.5 goals is 1.65.
Our best tip for Morocco vs. Spain game
Spain failed to keep a clean sheet in six of its last ten matches, while Morocco scored in eight of its previous ten. Spain’s defense is not impenetrable, mostly because Rodri is playing as a center-back alongside Pau Torres or Aymeric Laporte, which is not his natural position. Even if Enriques goes with Laporte/Torres pairing on Tuesday, we believe the Atlas Lions can find the back of the net. We didn't have an upset in the Round of 16 thus far, but this can turn out to be a major one.
