Netherlands vs. Argentina - Betting tips, predictions, and odds
The quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup continue with a tilt between the Netherlands and Argentina at Education City Stadium. Here you can check out the best Croatia vs. Brazil betting tips and predictions.
H2H, form, and stats
Netherlands and Argentina have a rich H2H history at World Cups. They have met five times at the WC, four of which were in the knockout stage. Argentina won the WC in 1978 after beating Oranje in extra-time and won the most recent H2H in the semis in 2014 in Brazil. The Netherlands also have two knockout wins over Argentina, while the lone group-stage match ended 0-0. They played a pair of friendlies; the Netherlands won one with a draw.
Netherlands extended its unbeaten streak to 19 games after defeating the USA in the Round of 16 here in Qatar. Louis van Gaal’s men topped their group above Senegal, Ecuador, and Qatar before beating the Americans 3-1. Memphis Depay and Daley Blind scored first-half goals for the Netherlands, and even though the USA cut the deficit to half through Haji Wright, the Dutch answered only five minutes later as Denzel Dumfries set the final score, 3-1. Dumfries was the player of the match with a goal and two assists.
Argentina lost its first game in the tournament to Saudi Arabia, but bounced back magnificently from that shock and won the next three. La Albiceleste scored two goals in each of those three matches as they defeated Mexico (2-0), Poland (2-0), and Australia (2-1) in the Round of 16.
Lionel Scaloni’s side dominated the tilt against the Socceroos but almost dropped a 2-0 lead in the dying moments after missing numerous opportunities to put the game to bed earlier. Lionel Messi and Julian Alvarez scored for Argentina, while Enzo Fernandez scored an own goal to make it 2-1. Lautaro Martinez failed to score the third for the Argentines and that nearly cost his team.
Injuries and squad news
Defender Stefan de Vrij is still recovering from an injury and is listed as questionable to face Argentina on Friday. Louis van Gaal will continue to start Virgil van Dijk, Nathan Ake, and Jurrien Timber in the back three, while Depay and Cody Gakpo will start in the attack. Frenkie de Jong has a guaranteed place in the middle of the park, and this team is unimaginable without Blind and Dumfries on the flanks.
Papu Gomez, who lasted only 49 minutes against Argentina and played just 107 minutes at this World Cup, is questionable with an ankle injury. However, he is not such an important player in Scaloni’s system, so there is no doubt that the head coach has the right player to slot into the starting eleven. Angel Di Maria is back at full strength and will join Messi and Alvarez in the attack.
Betting predictions and odds
Argentina is a favorite against the Netherlands as the bookies give 2.20 odds on La Albiceleste to win. Oranje has a good chance to progress to the quarterfinals, and if you believe they can do it, back them at 3.58, while a draw is at 3.11. When it comes to goals, Over 2.5 goals is 2.46 and Under 2.5 goals is 1.54.
Our best tip for Netherlands vs. Argentina game
Even though the previous three H2H duels ended with goals only on one side, we expect to see goals on each end this time around. Argentina scored in every game at this World Cup, while the Netherlands also managed to find the back of the net in every match in Qatar. Oranje scored in each of the last 19 matches, while that occurred in each of Argentina’s previous 13. This encounter has goals written all over it and we’re not going to miss out on an opportunity to cash in.
