Portugal vs. Uruguay - Betting tips, predictions, and odds
The final game of Round 2 at the FIFA World Cup will be played between Group H rivals Portugal and Uruguay at Lusail Iconic Stadium. Feel free to read the best Portugal vs. Uruguay betting tips and predictions.
H2H, form, and stats
Portugal and Uruguay have met just once before, and it was four years ago at the World Cup in Russia, when Uruguay celebrated a 2-1 victory in the Round of 16. Edinson Cavani scored a brace for La Celeste, while Pepe got a goal for Portugal. Although in their late 30s, both Cavani and Pepe are playing in this tournament as well.
Portugal got a 3-2 win at the start of this World Cup, and even though they had a harder job than expected against Ghana, the three points are all that counts. Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring in the 65h minute from the penalty spot, becoming the first player to score at five World Cups. Andre Ayew tied it for Ghana before Bruno Fernandes dished two assists to Joao Felix and Rafael Leao, who scored in the space of three minutes to make it 3-1 for Os Navegadores. Ghana managed to soften a defeat through Osman Bukari, but Portugal jumped to first place in the group with these three points.
Uruguay had its chances against South Korea in the opener, but Diego Godin in the first half and Federico Valverde in the 90th hit a crossbar. The game ended without goals as neither side had a shot on target! La Celeste was slightly better, but that’s no consolation for their fans who counted on three points here. Now, it’s going to be harder to do it against Portugal. Uruguay is still in fine form; Diego Alonso’s men won seven of the previous ten matches (D2, L1) and kept the net intact in eight. This run lasts from Alonso’s first game in charge after he succeeded legendary head coach Óscar Tabárez.
Injuries and squad news
Portugal's head coach Fernando Santos will be without injured defender Nuno Mendes, but the rest of the squad is healthy and ready to go. Rafael Leao could get a start after a goal in a cameo against Ghana, but Santos will likely keep both Ronaldo and Felix in the starting lineup. That could change in Round 3 if Portugal secures a victory here. Goalkeeper Diogo Costa was Portugal's weakest link against Ghana and nearly made a tragic error in the dying seconds, but luckily for him, Inaki Williams slipped in a crucial moment and failed to score. Santos may opt for Rui Patricio or Jose Sa to start at the goal versus Uruguay.
Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani are not young anymore and it’s clear none of them can play 90 minutes. Darwin Nunez’s place in the starting XI is guaranteed, and we can only guess whether Alonso will go with Suarez or Cavani from the start. Giorgian de Arrascaeta still hasn't played a single minute at this World Cup, and he could get his chance on Monday. Defender Ronald Araujo is out with a muscle injury but should be ready for the Round of 16, if the Uruguayans make it there, of course.
Portugal vs. Uruguay Betting predictions and odds
Portugal is a 1.96 favorite to beat Uruguay in this encounter. If you think that Uruguay can make a little upset, back La Celeste at 4.10, while a draw is 3.32. The bookmakers are not convinced that these two rivals will give us a high-scoring affair, so they offered 1.67 odds on Under 2.5 goals and 2.19 on Over 2.5 goals.
Our best tip for Portugal vs. Uruguay game
Portugal can live with a point out of this game, while it also shouldn't be the end of the world for Uruguay, who will set its sight on Ghana in Round 3. Os Navegadores are looking for revenge after that aforementioned loss at the World Cup in Russia, but it’s not a must-win game for Fernando Santos’ side.
Uruguay will look not to concede and if they score, it’s going to be a bonus. At the moment, Uruguay is better defensively and more serious at the back than Portugal, who does have more creativity and flair. It’s going to be a leveled game and a share of points is likely.
