Qatar vs. Senegal - Betting tips, predictions, and odds
Qatar and Senegal will open Round 2 with a Group A tilt of the FIFA World Cup at Al Thumama Stadium. Check out the best Qatar vs. Senegal betting tips and predictions.
H2H, form, and stats
Qatar and Senegal will meet for the first time ever. Qatar didn't enjoy its first-ever World Cup match as Ecuador beat them 2-0 on an opening day. Not only that the Maroons lost, but they didn't even attempt a single shot on target. Ecuador captain and best player Enner Valencia scored a first-half brace and that was enough for the visitors to get three points and start the competition on a high note.
Senegal played well in the opener against the Netherlands, but conceded a couple of late goals and suffered a 2-0 defeat. Cody Gakpo and Davy Klaassen scored for the Oranje, and even though Senegal had more shots (14-9, 3-3 on target), the absence of the African best player Sadio Mane was felt on the pitch. Goalkeeper Édouard Mendy was a culprit for that opening goal as his decision to leave a goal line to punch a cross cost his team because Gakpo was first to it. The Lions of Teranga needed a proven goal-scorer to finish off some of the great attacking possessions, while the Dutch players knew to punish that on the other end.
Injuries and squad news
Qatar looked lost and afraid on their World Cup debut, but they should be more relaxed against Senegal. There wasn't a player we could single out from that opening game as every one of them failed to impress and struggled against Ecuador. Still, there is no doubt that the head coach Félix Sánchez will expect much more from his star attacking trio: Almoez Ali, Hassan Al-Haydos, and Akram Afif. They have 104 combined goals for their nation and must display an improved performance against Senegal on Friday.
Without Sadio Mane, a lot is expected from Watford’s forward Ismaila Sarr, who is a top-scorer of the current team with ten goals. He was the best Senegalese player on the pitch against the Netherlands, alongside the holding midfielder Cheikhou Kouyaté, who left the game with 20 minutes to go due to an injury. It is unknown whether Kouyaté will be able to play against Qatar, but even if he sits this one out, it shouldn't be a problem for Senegal to control the midfield against weak hosts.
Qatar vs. Senegal Betting predictions and odds
Following that disappointing display from Qatar in Round 1, the bookmakers lowered the odds on Senegal’s win from 2.00 to 1.63. In the corresponding move, the odds on Qatar rose from 3.75 to 5.80, while a draw is at 3.75. The bookies believe we’re not going to see more than two goals here as they offered 1.63 odds on Under 2.5 goals and 2.26 on Over 2.5 goals.
Our best tip for Qatar vs. Senegal game
Even though the bookies decided to give lower odds on the Lions Of Teranga to get three points against Qatar, we’re still going to take it. Qatar showed nothing against Ecuador, and it’s evident that they don’t have the quality to compete with the big boys at such a strong tournament. If they weren’t hosts, they would never qualify for the WC, let’s be real about it. Senegal is playing without its biggest star Mane, but still has a better team and following that defeat to the Netherlands, they know they must beat weak Qatar to keep their Round of 16 hopes alive. We’re backing them to do it.
