Serbia vs. Switzerland - Betting tips, predictions, and odds
Serbia and Switzerland will fight for a Round of 16 place when they meet at Stadium 974 in Round 3 of Group G at the FIFA World Cup. Take a look at the best Serbia vs. Switzerland betting tips and predictions.
H2H, form, and stats
Serbia and Switzerland have met just once before but it was a memorable match and we expect to see another one on Friday. It was at the World Cup in Russia four years ago in the group stage. Serbia got to an early 1-0 lead through Aleksandar Mitrović, but then Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri (in the 90th minute) secured three precious points for Switzerland.
We had a few incidents related to politics in that duel and bigotry between some players was clearly visible, so we wouldn't be surprised if this game produces the most cards in a game at this World Cup.
Serbia didn't stand a chance against Brazil in a 2-0 loss in the opener but played much better against Cameroon. Despite trailing early, Orlovi scored two quick goals in the space of just three minutes in added time in the first half to make it 2-1. Strahinja Pavlović and Sergej Milinković-Savić scored, and then Aleksandar Mitrović netted a fantastic team goal in the 53rd minute to make it 3-1 for Serbia.
Orlovi could score one or two goals to destroy the Cameroonians, but they made a couple of unreasonable mistakes on defense, trying to catch speedy Les Lions Indomptables into an offside trap and regretted each time as Cameroon equalized in the space of four minutes. The remaining 30 minutes didn't produce any more goals, so now Serbia needs to beat Switzerland in order to progress to the Round of 16.
Switzerland snatched a tight 1-0 victory over Cameroon in Round 1 but didn't have a single shot on target in a 1-0 defeat to Brazil in the following match. Luckily for the Swiss, the Brazilians played at 50% of their abilities and it could be a bigger win for the South Americans only if they wanted it. With three points from two matches, A-Team now needs just a point against Serbia to advance to the knockout stage for the third consecutive time at the World Cup. Switzerland did lose six of the previous 11 matches (W4, D1).
Injuries and squad news
Serbia’s head coach Dragan Stojković doesn't have any new injury-related concerns as convalescents Dušan Vlahović and Filip Kostić are getting back to full fitness and are match fit. Stojković has an opportunity to field both Mitrović and Vlahović from the start and play with his usual 3-5-2 formation. After all, he needs a win here.
Switzerland’s head coach Murat Yakin will be without forward Noah Okafor, who is dealing with a muscle injury. Okafor isn't a starter, so his absence won’t affect the team. Breel Embolo will lead the line once again, while Xherdan Shaqiri, who didn't feature against Brazil, will probably be ready to take on Serbia.
Betting predictions and odds
Serbia is a slight favorite at 2.56 odds in this one, but if you believe Switzerland can repeat the success from four years ago, you can back them at 2.76, while a draw is 3.32. The bettors who prefer betting on goals, Over 2.5 goals is 2.05 and Under 2.5 goals can be found at 1.77.
Our best tip for Serbia vs. Switzerland game
It’s needless to say that this particular matchup is going to be one of the most electrifying duels at the World Cup in Qatar. We believe that there is no place for politics in football and sports in general for that matter, but the reality is that these two are closely related.
There will be plenty of emotions, tension, and intolerance on the pitch, no doubt about it, but in terms of quality, we think Serbia has a slight edge. Stojković has learned from his defensive mistakes against Cameroon and will not let the same errors happen.
Serbia has better players who play for bigger European clubs and has a lethal attacking tandem of Mitrović and Vlahović. They can unlock any defense in the world when playing together and with Dušan Tadić, Sergej Milinković-Savićn, and Filip Kostić to supply useful passes, Serbia should score at least a goal, which can turn out to be just enough for three points and a place in the Round of 16.
Switzerland doesn't look good enough offensively, and if they think to keep Serbia to a scoreless draw, they will not go through this time around.
