South Korea vs. Portugal - Betting tips, predictions, and odds
South Korea is playing with the back up against the wall and faces elimination from the FIFA World Cup when they take on Portugal in Round 3 of Group H at Education City Stadium. Make sure you don’t forget to read the best South Korea vs. Portugal betting tips and predictions.
H2H, form, and stats
South Korea and Portugal have met once so far, and it was at the World Cup in 2002 when Taegeuk Warriors got a 1-0 victory in the group stage. That win eliminated Portugal from the competition, and the legendary Ji-Sung Park was a goal-scorer. Now, Portugal has a chance for revenge and a win that would send South Korea home.
South Korea had the luck to avoid a defeat in Round 1 against Uruguay, but then they suffered a 3-2 loss to Ghana in the next game, even though the Black Stars had just three attempts on target. Paulo Bento’s men tried hard to stay unbeaten in that game as well, but without success. Gue-Sung Cho scored a brace in the space of just three minutes to equalize to 2-2 after Ghana’s two first-half goals. The momentum was on South Korea’s side and just when many thought they will score the third and winning goal, Ghana scored on the other end to make it 3-2. It was only the second loss in 11 matches for South Korea (W6, D3).
Portugal secured its place in the Round of 16 with two victories over Ghana and Uruguay. Following a 3-2 win against Ghana, Os Navegadores beat Uruguay 2-0, although it could end differently as Uruguay had some serious chances at a 1-0 result. Bruno Fernandes scored two for Fernando Santos’ side despite Cristiano Ronaldo’s claims that he touched the ball for the opening goal. It was awarded to Bruno, who now has two goals and two assists in this tournament. Portugal also has two losses in 11 games (W8, D1).
Injuries and squad news
Defender Min-Jae Kim is questionable to play because of a calf injury, and if he is unavailable to feature against Portugal, it will be a huge blow for Paulo Bento. Napoli’s center-back is the best defender South Korea has, and if he’s forced to miss this game, Kyung-Won Kwon is his likely substitute. All eyes will be on Heung-Min Son, who still didn't record a goal or an assist at this World Cup.
Nuno Mendes will miss the rest of the World Cup after suffering a thigh injury in the first half against Uruguay. Otavio (muscle) didn't train with the team and is likely going to miss the game against South Korea, whale Danilo Pereira has three fractured ribs and will skip this match. Fernando Santos is going to mix up his starting XI, so expect to see some fresh faces from the opening whistle.
Betting predictions and odds
The odds on Portugal drastically jumped from 1.35 to 1.75 after that win against Uruguay, which sent them to the Round of 16. South Korea is now at 4.18, while a draw is at 4.08. If you don't like 1X2 and prefer goals instead, you can back Over 2.5 goals at 1.85 or Under 2.5 goals at 1.95.
Our best tip for South Korea vs. Portugal game
South Korea did play well against Ghana and didn't deserve to lose, but that’s the thing with such a competition - there aren’t many opportunities to make amends. Now, even with a win here South Korea depends on the result elsewhere as Ghana and Uruguay are also in the mix.
We don’t think the Taegeuk Warriors are quality enough to make it through, at least not from this particular group, but we are convinced they will try until the very last second. Portugal may look uninterested and without imperative, but there will be several players who will be hoping to impress head coach Santos, and that’s why we anticipate seeing a high-scoring affair.
