Spain vs. Costa Rica - Betting tips, predictions, and odds
Spain and Costa Rica will close the opening round in Group E of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar with a duel at Al Thumama Stadium. Here you can take a look at the best Spain vs. Costa Rica betting tips and predictions.
H2H, form, and stats
Spain and Costa Rica have faced on three occasions so far. The Spaniards won two with one draw, and La Furia Roja was furious in the most recent H2H tilt as they won 5-0 in 2017.
As usual, Spain didn't have trouble qualifying for the World Cup. They won four consecutive games to top the group four points ahead of Sweden, who was later eliminated in the playoffs. Spain had a successful UEFA Nations League campaign and qualified for the final stage after defeating Portugal on the road in the last round to finish above the Portuguese. Spain suffered only one loss in the last ten games, winning seven of them along the way.
Costa Rica ended their CONCACAF qualifications on a high note, winning each of the last four games. However, that didn't help them to avoid an additional playoff match because the Costa Ricans finished 4th with the same amount of points as the USA, but with a worse goal difference.
Los Ticos beat New Zealand 1-0 to make it to Qatar. Joel Campbell scored the game-winning goal. Costa Rica played three friendlies before coming to Qatar. They defeated Uzbekistan and Nigeria, and drew with South Korea, scoring two goals in each.
Injuries and squad news
Spain’s head coach Luis Enrique decided to omit such stars as Sergio Ramos, David de Gea, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Thiago, Rodrigo, and Gerard Moreno from the World Cup squad. This decision didn't get along with the fans, but Spain still has plenty of talented players, who could take the nation far at this tournament.
Gavi and Pedri are definitely some of them, and it’s evident that Luis Enrique wanted to rejuvenate the team. Only three players have more than 30 years: Sergio Busquets, César Azpilicueta, and Jordi Alba. Álvaro Morata, who is the top scorer of this generation with 27 goals, will lead the line.
Costa Rica’s head coach Luis Fernando Suárez didn't make a lot of changes as he continues to rely on the experience of Bryan Ruiz, Celso Borges, Joel Campbell, and Keylor Navas. These four already have World Cup experience and they played when Costa Rica made major surprises in the previous tournaments. Each of them has over 100 caps for the national team, while these three outfield players each scored at least 25 goals for Los Ticos.
Spain vs. Costa Rica Betting predictions and odds
Spain is a massive favorite in this one, and if you want to risk your stake at miserable 1.13 odds, who are we to tell you not to? Although probably is not going to happen, you can back Costa Rica to win at 23.00 odds, while a draw is at 7.70. If you prefer betting on goals, you can back Over 2.5 goals at 1.70, while Under 2.5 goals can be found at 2.15.
Our best tip for Spain vs. Costa Rica game
We know that each of the three H2H duels produced at least three goals, but those were friendlies, and now a lot more is at stake at the World Cup. Costa Rica has an experienced team and plenty of players will play their third World Cup, so we cannot just write them off. Still, we do believe Spain will get three points, but it’s not going to be easy. Costa Rica knows how to frustrate opposing forwards, and we don't think Los Ticos will allow more than two in this one.
