Wales vs Denmark
Wales vs Denmark takes place on June 26 at the Amsterdam Arena in the first game of the round of 16 of Euro2020. Wales qualified for the knockout stages thanks to their second place finish in Group A, while Denmark’s emotional 4-1 win in Copenhagen against Russia ensured their progress as runners up in Group B. Read on for more analysis, match predictions and betting tips.
Form
Robert Page’s Welsh side have only won one of their games so far in this tournament, and finished the group second despite losing 1-0 to a second-string Italy side in Rome on Sunday. However, there is no doubt that Wales fans will be proud of their side getting this far and there is little expectation that they will repeat their run to the semi-finals of Euro 2016. Their defeat to Italy was the only competitive match the Welsh have lost since June 2019; some effort for a nation of just over three million people.
The scenes in Denmark were emotional as the Red and White returned to Parken Stadium on Sunday. With Christian Eriksen now out of hospital and recuperating following his heart attack in the first game, it was evident his team wanted to win their final game against Russia for both Eriksen and their fans, and they did so in emphatic fashion. The 4-1 win ensured they and not Finland who finished second, and with that ensured that they were not left sweating over other group results to see if their third place finish was good enough.

Injuries
Wales will be without Chelsea defender Ethan Ampadu for this game, due to the 20-year-old defender’s red card in the game against Italy. It was only the second red card of the tournament and Ampadu set an unwanted record of being the youngest player ever in European Championship history to be shown a straight red card. Other than that, Page should have a full squad to choose from. There is a question whether Kieffer Moore will start up front for this one with Page preferring to start without a recognised striker against Italy.
Although Eriksen has been ruled out of the tournament, Denmark boss Kasper Hjulmand has a full squad otherwise to choose from. Sampdoria forward Mikkel Damsgaard has been preferred in the front three over Copenhagen striker Jonas Wind in the last two games and Damsgaard has rewarded that faith with a goal against Russia. RB Leipzig striker Yussuf Poulsen has two goals so far and will be hopeful of another start to add to that tally.
Match Predictions
Denmark are favourites for this game with the bookies offering around 1.65 against them winning. This is to be expected as they are likely to have a large crowd behind them in Amsterdam while Welsh fans will not be allowed to travel to Amsterdam due to Covid restrictions. However, Wales are only as high as 3.00 with bookies to qualify for this game, so the bookies have not dismissed the possibility of them breaking Danish hearts. These two teams faced off in the 2018 Nations League with Denmark winning home and away. It’s hard to argue against betting tips saying that they’ll do the same again here.
