Who are the favourites to win Bundesliga?
The new Bundesliga season has started in Germany with Bayern Munich looking to win the title for the tenth time in succession. Rivals Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig will be looking to end that run of victories – have they got the squads to do it? We’ve put together some analysis, match predictions and betting tips to help you choose who you think will bring the title home.
Who are the Favourites to win the Bundesliga?
In recent times the Bundesliga has been a procession with Bayern winning at a canter every single season. However, with Robert Lewandowski another year older and a new manager at the helm, their rivals will be hopeful that this season won’t be so easy. We’ve outlined the favourites for the title this season below.
Bayern Munich 1.25
It’s very, very difficult to argue against backing Bayern to do it again this year. They have one of the strongest squads in Europe let alone the Bundesliga and in Robert Lewandowski they have the best out and out striker in the continent. There’s strength in depth too; as well as Lewandowski there are German international forwards Thomas Muller, Leroy Sane and Serge Gnabry in the squad – a prospect most teams probably find frightening.
While Bayern have lost the experienced Austrian defender David Alaba to Real Madrid, they have immediately flexed their financial muscles and replaced him with one of their rival’s best players Dayot Upamecano. The French international is only 22 but already has over 100 appearances at this level and should help ensure that Bayern remain rock solid at the back.
Bayern probably will make it 10 in a row but at these insanely short odds the value just isn’t there.
Borussia Dortmund 7.00
While Bayern have Lewandowski, Dortmund have the striker who could well take the Polish striker’s crown as the leading striker in German football. So far this summer Dortmund have managed to hold onto Erling Braut Haaland and if they are to win the Bundesliga they will need to ensure he remains for the entire season. In 44 Bundesliga games Haaland has scored 42 league goals which has made him the hottest striker in Europe and has ensured a lot of other teams are circling.
Dortmund have allowed Jadon Sancho to leave for Manchester United for a reported fee of €85.5M, replacing him with young Dutch forward Donyell Malen from PSV Eindhoven. The Black and Yellows have a raft of great young players in their squad too, including English midfielder Jude Bellingham, Brazilian midfielder Reinier on loan from Real Madrid and American midfielder Giovanni Reyna. If those players can come together and mature in this squad, it’s possible that former Gladbach coach Marco Rose could deliver the Bundesliga to Dortmund in his debut season as manager.
At 7.00 Dortmund could well be a value bet; there is quality within the squad and it might be the season that Bayern finally falter.
RB Leipzig 11.00
Although RB Leipzig finished as runners up last year, they are considered less of a favourite than Dortmund having lost their head coach and star centre-back to Bayern Munich. While new head coach Jesse Marsch knows the Red Bull group well having been previously manager at New York Red Bulls and Red Bull Salzburg (as well as assistant at RB Leipzig), this is a huge step up for the American manager.
RB Leipzig have done their best to reinvest having lost not only Upamecano but also Ibrahima Konate to Liverpool. French centre-back Mohamed Simakan has been brought in from Strasbourg and right back Benjamin Heinrichs has been brought in from Monaco. Marsch must also hope that new Portuguese forward Andre Silva can replicate last season which saw him score 28 times in 32 games for Eintracht Frankfurt, and that Spanish attacking midfielder Dani Olmo along with Croatian full back Josko Gvardiol can translate their excellent form from the European Championship into club form.
Again, like Dortmund RB Leipzig could be a value bet, especially if Bayern look like they are faltering.
