Who will win the ICC Mens T20 World Cup?
The delayed ICC Men’s T20 World Cup starts on October 17 in the United Arab Emirates and Oman. Holders West Indies will be hoping that they can retain the trophy they won back in 2016 in India, while number 1 ranked side England will be hoping that they can go one step better than runners-up to win their first T20 World Cup since 2010 in the West Indies.
T20 World Cup Teams
The T20 World Cup is divided into three parts, with eight qualifiers vying in the first round for a place in the Super 12 series. These include Test-playing nations such as Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Ireland, along with associate nations Namibia, Netherlands, Papua New Guinea, Scotland as well as hosts Oman.
The top two teams in each of the two first round groups will join the giants of world cricket in the Super 12 stage. The teams who have already qualified for this stage are Afghanistan, Australia, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa and West Indies. Again, these teams are split into two groups, with only the top two teams in each group of the Super 12 qualifying for the knockout stage with the final to be played in Dubai on November 14.
T20 World Cup Schedule and Venues
Matches are to be played in three venues across the United Arab Emirates along with one in Oman. The venues are the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, the Sheik Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi and the Al Amerat Cricket Stadium in Muscat.
Matches will be played between October 17 and November 14, with games either starting at 2pm or in the case of day/night games at 6pm. All knockout games will be day/night games.
T20 World Cup Favourites
With this tournament being delayed for 12 months and coronavirus impacting how many cricket matches have been played around the world it’s a bit harder than usual to pick a favourite. India 3.50
The bookies favourites are India and in many ways it’s the smart pick. The premier club T20 tournament is the Indian Premier League (IPL) and all of India’s best players will have taken part in that tournament. Furthermore, due to coronavirus the second half of the tournament, as well as the knockout stages, took place in the UAE in the last few weeks, meaning that many of India’s best players such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravinda Jadeja are already acclimatised to local conditions – which is very important in cricket. They have a team to be feared and it’s hard to see past them.
England 4.00
While England are the top-ranked T20 team in the world currently the lack of action for many players in the IPL will probably be a detriment to the squad. However, England have in their side destructive batsmen who can take games away from bowlers when on form. Liam Livingstone had a blistering summer in T20 cricket for England while Jos Buttler, Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow are all capable of big scores. With surfaces likely to be flat batting tracks spin bowlers could be essential which means it could be a big tournament also for Adil Rashid; especially if England’s batsman fail at the crease.
West Indies 7.00
Winners last time out, the West Indies are only third favourites and are ranked a lowly ninth in the world. However, as England found out last time out it’s impossible to write off West Indies as their spirit can carry them through to victory. The Caribbean Premier League has helped nurture talent in the West Indies ranks, and while they’re still somewhat reliant on old-stagers like Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Bravo and the 42-year-old Chris Gayle, there is some new blood coming through. Oshane Thomas has looked very promising for the Barbados Royals while Shimron Hetmyer also looks a talent in his performances so far for the Windies.
Afghanistan 67.00
While it’s true Afghanistan are very unlikely to win anything, it’s absolutely impossible to write them off in any game, especially in these conditions. Their bowling unit is unplayable at times while they have batsmen with real quality on their side. Skipper Mohammed Nabi has played in England, Pakistan, and the Caribbean for various teams as a franchise player and is a useful all-rounder; former captain Rashid Khan has 95 wickets in T20 internationals bowling leg-breaks and wicketkeeper Mohammad Shahzad averages a very healthy 31.22 in T20 International cricket. Bet against them in individual matches at your peril, because this gutsy side will not roll over for anyone.
